Course Overview

The IAS Advanced Diploma course is a comprehensive orthodontic course to train dentists to manage more complex malocclusions, including extraction cases. 

 
The College of General Dentistry recognises IAS Advanced training as their preferred provider and in preparation for the CGDent's Diploma in Primary Care Orthodontics (DipPCOrth) qualification. 
 
The course covers all appliance systems - fixed functional, aligners, lingual and Inman - covering the theoretical and practical aspects of orthodontic care. 
 
During training, you will discuss multiple new cases, participate in online webinars and hands-on practicals and receive one-to-one mentoring from specialists on at least 10 treated cases.
 
The course is recommended for dentists treating a minimum of 10 orthodontic cases per annum and familiar with fixed appliances. This is to ensure that you have enough case flow and experience. 
 
Recognition of Prior Learning (Eligibility)
 
You need to have a BDS or equivalent dental qualification and must be registered to practice dentistry in the UK or your home country. 
 
You are expected to have treated to completion at least 10 Fixed Brace cases. As part of your preparation, you will be given access to the IAS Assessment, Diagnosis and Records online course, which you must complete before starting.
 
To be fully familiar with IAS philosophies, you may wish to attend the IAS Fixed Brace course. Please contact us directly should you wish to do so.
 
As part of registration for the course and with the College of General Dentistry, you will need to submit an up-to-date academic CV with your contact information, a personal statement on why you wish to attend the course and references from a colleague.
 
The two-year programme comprises over 6 courses covering the following syllabus.

Please note when joining the programme, you will have treated to completion at least 10 fixed cases. You will be granted access to the IAS Assessment, Diagnosis and Records online course which you are expected to complete by the time you commence the IAS Advanced course.

The IAS Advanced Course is a Diploma (Level 7) course with 154 verifiable CPD hours. The teaching follows best-practice in higher education with interactive lectures, hands-on practicals, webinars and literature.

Training also includes one-to-one specialist case supervision with a review of treated cases so students can form a personal portfolio to demonstrate competency in orthodontics.

Essentials

Essential Pre-course reading

You will be expected to complete pre-course reading; during courses, delegates will be required to assess papers and/or cases overnight for discussion the following day. The essential texts for this course are:

  • An Introduction to Orthodontics, Laura Mitchell, 4th edition, Oxford University Press.
  • Contemporary Orthodontics, WR Profitt, 5th edition, Mosby.
  • Postgraduate Notes in Orthodontics, Multiple Authors, University of Bristol.

You will also be advised to review various online journals, audits, reports and research studies.

Essential Equipment

Participants will require an array of orthodontic instruments and tools for use in practice whilst treating patients. IAS Academy will provide the necessary equipment for the course’s hands-on sessions.

In addition, you will need:

  • A quality digital SLR camera with macro lens and ring flashIntra-oral photography mirrors. Intra-oral photography mirrors
  • Photographic ‘V’ and ‘C’ shaped retractors

You are advised to bring loupes to the hands-on sessions if you use them in practice.

For case assessments you will require a ruler and a protractor for tracing Cephs and a light box.

Discussions, Mentoring & Supervised Cases

Online Planning Discussions and Mentoring

Delegates should log in to the forum regularly, as participation is part of the ongoing course assessment. 

Supervised Cases

Delegates will be expected to treat at least 10 cases under the IAS specialist team’s one-to-one supervision. This involves posting images of each patient’s visit on the exclusive Advanced Intake Forum, monitoring case progress and receiving feedback and advice on which treatments to carry out at the next appointment. 

You will be expected to bring and treatment plan 2-3 cases per course for presentation and open discussion. This involves bringing full records (trimmed study models, photos and radiographs) digitally with your assessment, diagnosis and treatment plan(s) ready to present. These planned cases are not part of your 10 supervised cases unless the decision is to treat them. 

Independent Study & Audit Project

Independent Study

During courses, delegates will be expected to assess papers and/or cases overnight for discussion the following day.

Audit Project

You will be required to complete a small group audit on a project of your choosing. The details of this will be covered during the first course.

Assessments
Continuous informal and formal assessments throughout the programme will include hands-on practical sessions, presentations, and multiple-choice questionnaires.
 
The aim is to achieve equivalence to a Diploma in Primary Orthodontic Care.
Course Fees

The course fee is £13,950.00 +VAT (£16,740.00)

An initial non-refundable payment of £1395.00 +VAT (£1674.00) is required to secure your booking.

The full balance is payable within 12 months of signing up for the course.

Please note that the course fee does not include accommodation, course literature or required materials and equipment.

Meet the Lecturers

Ross Hobson

Ross Hobson

Prof* Ross Hobson BDS, MDS, PhD, FDS, MDOrth (RCPS), FDS (RCS Ed), FDS (RCS Eng), SFHEA

Ross graduated from the University of Newcastle, has Fellowships from the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Glasgow, Edinburgh and England. His MDOrth is from the RCPS Glasgow). He was the first dentist to be awarded the prestigious Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. His specialist orthodontic training was completed in Dundee. He has published over 60 refereed articles on Orthodontics, hypodontia, dental materials and education. He was appointed to the Chair in Orthodontics at UClan to develop part-time specialist orthodontic training in primary care.

1992 – 2009: Newcastle upon Tyne University, Senior Lecturer/Consultant, Head of Department and the MSc/ Specialist training program in orthodontics.

2004-2008: Chair of CCDAS (the BDA academic committee) and a member of the BDA Executive Board.

2010: He was awarded the BDA Fellowship in recognition of his work for the profession.

2012: He and his partners established Windmill Orthodontic Group, the North of England’s first 7 private multidisciplinary specialist practices

Josh Rowley

Josh Rowley

Dr Josh Rowley graduated from The University of Dundee in 2014 and after being nominated twice in the years before, went on to win Best Young Dentist and Best Smile Makeover at the Dentistry Scotland Awards in 2020.

Now a specialist orthodontist, Josh is a certified provider of SureSmile Aligners. His commitment to orthodontics is proven further with his memberships at the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh and The Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.

Dr Rowley’s interests lie in cutting edge-digital techniques in both orthodontics and digital smile design as well as elements of general dentistry. He has shown a passion for complex cases including growth modification for growing children, aesthetic facial surgical enhancements for dental malocclusions, facial disharmony and breathing disturbances.

Asif Chatoo

Asif Chatoo

Dr Chatoo qualified as a Dentist from King’s College, London in 1993 and gained his Master’s Degree in Orthodontics at GKT Dental Institute, London in 2001. He received specialist training in Lingual Orthodontics in Paris in 2002.

In 2005 he opened The London Lingual Orthodontic Clinic, the first clinic in the UK dedicated to lingual Orthodontics. Asif has lectured around the world on a variety of topics, on lingual orthodontics, adult treatment and digital technology. Last year he lectured at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, in Tunisia at the first ever meeting of the Tunisian Lingual Orthodontic Society and at the British Orthodontic Conference.

He is the Secretary of the European Society of Lingual Orthodontics and Chairman of the Scientific Committee of ESLO 2018. Dr Chatoo is the only orthodontist accredited by both the World and the European Lingual Orthodontic Societies.

Zaid Esmail

Zaid Esmail

After graduating with honors from the University of Liverpool in 2008, Zaid Ismail pursued general professional training at Newcastle Dental Hospital. 

He then relocated to London for senior house officer positions in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Royal London Hospital and in pediatric dentistry at Guy's Hospital.

In 2012, Zaid began a three-year MSc in orthodontics at Guy's Hospital and the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital in Brighton, where he graduated with distinction. Today, he is a registered specialist in orthodontics and holds membership in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Zaid is also a member of the British Orthodontic Association, the European Orthodontic Society, and the American Association of Orthodontists.
