The IAS Advanced Diploma course is a comprehensive orthodontic course to train dentists to manage more complex malocclusions, including extraction cases.

The IAS Advanced Course is a Diploma (Level 7) course with 154 verifiable CPD hours. The teaching follows best-practice in higher education with interactive lectures, hands-on practicals, webinars and literature.
Training also includes one-to-one specialist case supervision with a review of treated cases so students can form a personal portfolio to demonstrate competency in orthodontics.
Essentials
Essential Pre-course reading
You will be expected to complete pre-course reading; during courses, delegates will be required to assess papers and/or cases overnight for discussion the following day. The essential texts for this course are:
- An Introduction to Orthodontics, Laura Mitchell, 4th edition, Oxford University Press.
- Contemporary Orthodontics, WR Profitt, 5th edition, Mosby.
- Postgraduate Notes in Orthodontics, Multiple Authors, University of Bristol.
You will also be advised to review various online journals, audits, reports and research studies.
Essential Equipment
Participants will require an array of orthodontic instruments and tools for use in practice whilst treating patients. IAS Academy will provide the necessary equipment for the course’s hands-on sessions.
In addition, you will need:
- A quality digital SLR camera with macro lens and ring flashIntra-oral photography mirrors. Intra-oral photography mirrors
- Photographic ‘V’ and ‘C’ shaped retractors
You are advised to bring loupes to the hands-on sessions if you use them in practice.
For case assessments you will require a ruler and a protractor for tracing Cephs and a light box.

Discussions, Mentoring & Supervised Cases

Delegates should log in to the forum regularly, as participation is part of the ongoing course assessment.
Supervised Cases
Delegates will be expected to treat at least 10 cases under the IAS specialist team’s one-to-one supervision. This involves posting images of each patient’s visit on the exclusive Advanced Intake Forum, monitoring case progress and receiving feedback and advice on which treatments to carry out at the next appointment.
You will be expected to bring and treatment plan 2-3 cases per course for presentation and open discussion. This involves bringing full records (trimmed study models, photos and radiographs) digitally with your assessment, diagnosis and treatment plan(s) ready to present. These planned cases are not part of your 10 supervised cases unless the decision is to treat them.
Independent Study & Audit Project

During courses, delegates will be expected to assess papers and/or cases overnight for discussion the following day.
Audit Project
You will be required to complete a small group audit on a project of your choosing. The details of this will be covered during the first course.

The course fee is £13,950.00 +VAT (£16,740.00)
An initial non-refundable payment of £1395.00 +VAT (£1674.00) is required to secure your booking.
The full balance is payable within 12 months of signing up for the course.
Please note that the course fee does not include accommodation, course literature or required materials and equipment.

Meet the Lecturers
Ross Hobson
Prof* Ross Hobson BDS, MDS, PhD, FDS, MDOrth (RCPS), FDS (RCS Ed), FDS (RCS Eng), SFHEA
Ross graduated from the University of Newcastle, has Fellowships from the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Glasgow, Edinburgh and England. His MDOrth is from the RCPS Glasgow). He was the first dentist to be awarded the prestigious Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. His specialist orthodontic training was completed in Dundee. He has published over 60 refereed articles on Orthodontics, hypodontia, dental materials and education. He was appointed to the Chair in Orthodontics at UClan to develop part-time specialist orthodontic training in primary care.
1992 – 2009: Newcastle upon Tyne University, Senior Lecturer/Consultant, Head of Department and the MSc/ Specialist training program in orthodontics.
2004-2008: Chair of CCDAS (the BDA academic committee) and a member of the BDA Executive Board.
2010: He was awarded the BDA Fellowship in recognition of his work for the profession.
2012: He and his partners established Windmill Orthodontic Group, the North of England’s first 7 private multidisciplinary specialist practices
